Interesting the number of mysterious cases of people being found with scratch marks on their bodies.

Yeah.  According to this source, the only toxin for which the pathologist tested was alcohol.  Only Bakholdin had any detectable alcohol in his blood.  The source reports his BAC as 0.45 percent, which has to be a mistake; it's probably supposed to be 0.45 permille, or 0.045%.  The pathologist concluded that hypothermia was the cause of death for all four victims.

Poisoning usually causes vomiting, though, and the description of the scene doesn't say anything about traces of vomit anywhere.

If there are no signs of foul play, then the quartet's food or drink must have been accidentally contaminated somehow.  What sort of foodborne or waterborne pathogen would suddenly debilitate four healthy twenty-somethings that they fall down and freeze to death only 2km away from their destination?
