Very interesting !

I belive they were searching for Labaz... That would explain why they stopped at the stream crossing, as this was an indication of their position. In the other valley, from the stream crossing they knew where was labaz : maybe they were surprise not to find any ski track. They stop to search around, not knowing they're in the wrong valley but maybe starting to suspect !
