Apropos of nothing undoubtedly but why did the group call themselves the Khibina group? Was it a reference to the Khibina Masif, the rare element, someone's name that they wanted to honor or an acronym? I've always wondered.

I was wondering this myself while writing this article.

The Kuznetsov-Zemlyanov (KuAI) group were going to Khibina, but that is in 1973.
If KuAI group called themselves Otorten it would be a complete reverse.
But Otorten is a very small mountain compared to Khibina massif.
I wondered myself and I was told that most probably Dyatlov group nicknamed themselves Khibina group because it's a big famous mountain and they chose it for reasons no other than just liking the name and honoring the place.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was curious!! I was worried it was a "silly" question, lol! Thank you!!!

This is a very legit question, especially since no one seems to have been to Khibina.
