Title: New monument
Post by: Teddy on September 01, 2021, 01:34:12 PM
2021 has been a rather benighted year for the Dyatlov Pass. It became trending clickbait in early February (https://dyatlovpass.com/clickbait) for many in the West. Then, one of the greatest researchers, Igor Pavlov, passed away suddenly of cancer (https://dyatlovpass.com/rip-igor-pavlov), followed by the head of the Dyatlov Foundation, Yuri Kuntsevich, who fell victim to Covid-19 (https://dyatlovpass.com/rip-yuri-kuntsevich). Seasoned hikers were involved in accidents that could have had grave consequences (https://dyatlovpass.com/kuntsevich-last-expedition).  British journalist Graham Phillips left an expedition in a huff (https://dyatlovpass.com/graham-phillips), calling Dyatlov Pass on UralLive a "theme park". Finally, the surroundings of where the Dyatlov group's tent was found in 1959 will forever be defaced by a four-meter high incomprehensible phallic abomination (https://dyatlovpass.com/new-monument). The only good news is that now you can't miss the spot.

It's certainly been an eventful and also sad year.  I'm not too sure what the monument is meant to convey to be honest.  Did the families of the Dyatlov Group have any input?

Did the families of the Dyatlov Group have any input?

No.
Most people on the Russian forum (https://taina.li/forum/index.php?topic=16613.0) don't like this strange sculpture.
The prevailing opinion is that the author of the sculpture made a monument to himself, and not to the Dyatlov group since this pretentious structure does not reflect at all and is not associated either with the tragedy of the Dyatlov group or with the memory of the hikers.
------------------------------------------

I have a hard time understanding what it's supposed to represent.
Only 4 people on it?
The diver only makes sens if you agree with the "fall at the cliff" theory (I think it's per example Wab's, on this forum) ? Or I just don't understand why he put this guy in this position. That makes no sense...

If somebody wants to make art about the DPI, fine. But leave the art to the galleries, museums, etc, or better, in the Dyatlov foundation. In this mountain, this is nothing like a memorial: Somebody who doesn't know about the DPI won't understand why this thing's here. (and even knowing about !)
This is a very egocentric way to show one's interest on DPI and (dis-)respect both to the dead and to all hikers passing by.

I would compare it to someone carving in the cedar "The DPI is fascinating me" rather than to someone leaving a flower at the tent place.

To be honest, that "thing" is an utter disgrace. Who even allowed this "monument" to be erected there?! Or it was self initiative by the so called "artist"?
Even if it did represent the tragedy of the Dyatlov group in a sane way , its place would still not be there.

What a shame for everyone involved in this, what a shame.  neg1

.................

......................

Maybe not forever defaced ---> ?

Indeed on https://taina.li/forum/index.php?topic=16613.0   I read.

(Translation from Russian by DeepL and it is my turn to put in bold.)

SHS : Response #74 : 25.08.21 20:13
«I have seen the monument up close, felt, sniffed and can say the following.

I don't understand what is meant by "composites" in the video above - to me both the base and the sculptures are the usual injection molded plastic with a thickness of a few mm maximum (4 ... 6 mm), most likely from the styrene group (... ABS, the same polystyrene, even if impact resistant, etc.) with a special coating, again, polymeric, imitation concrete for the base and something like a glossy silver paint with a very high gloss in the second for the sculptures. The silver sculptures themselves are clearly glued on.
Most of all I liked the fastening of the base on the rocks CC on conventional assembly foam - they have foamed from each edge directly on the kurum such a foam pad 300x300, on which and mounted the base, and it already glued all the rest. All the elements are obviously cast, and obviously hollow.

I don't know how long such a polymer sculpture will last on the HTF, »we'll see in spring and see how it survived the winter, but not long anyway, a couple of years maximum, then the process of destruction will start without any conditions and without any help from outside.»

Vladimir (from Ekb) : Response #75 : 25.08.21 20:47
« Well, if indeed this "masterpiece" of polystyrene, it is unlikely it will have a long life...»
   .....................
If I understood this Russian text correctly, Vladimir (from Ekb) hints that the natural destruction of the monument could perhaps be quietly accelerated by human initiatives. (Oh ! This is not nice !)
.......................
«...And, you see, the question with this "masterpiece" will be solved in the most natural way. »

.............  rather than to someone leaving a flower at the tent place.

You have also to take into account that a 300 kg monument is more difficult to transport than a flower.

I think you are being a bit harsh. In her article in Russian, Natalya Varsegova (well known on this site) gives the point of view of Grigory Maslennikov.

https://www.kp.ru/daily/28299/4439558/

«... I [Natalya Varsegova] looked for an answer to a question that tormented me: why is there a monument at the Dyatlov Pass ? In 1963, the friends of the dead tourists erected a memorial plaque on one of the rocky outcrops - "There were nine of them...". And that seemed to be enough. Then suddenly a monument appeared, and what a monument ! A sculpture in the shape of a rock aberration, which four people are trying to conquer. Someone climbs, someone falls, someone crosses a rock.

- What do these people have to do with those who tragically died on the mountain pass? - I ask Grigory Maslennikov, an artist-architect.

- I didn't want to repeat the story of the Dyatlov group in a single form, I wanted an abstract image that everyone could understand," he replies. - A metaphorical story in which everyone can see their own meaning. The ups and downs, the passage through nature, the exploits and incredible deeds.

- Why did you decide to dedicate a monument to the Dyatlov Pass?

- When I was approached by the Leaders Club, I decided - why not. It is a strange and enigmatic story. There is a mystery in it. Moreover, the pass itself is a difficult place to reach.

- Exactly! Is it worth carrying the monument there?

- On the one hand, we pay tribute to the lost group. On the other hand, we give the place a second life, drawing attention to it.

I know that this statement will sound controversial to many people. But contemporary art is not intimidated by controversy...»

It's OK as a sculpture, but I don't really think it belongs as a monument on Dyatlov Pass.

It doesn't look like it's going to last more than a few years in that environment, though.

All "Art" should have a theme consistent with the subject matter, respectful of its surroundings, especially in nature and encompasses a spiritual and intellectual identity to the matter for which it was created.

This art has no connections to any of the above. None whatsoever. I see no Dyatlov skiers in it, no theme connected with Russian adventuring, no connection to the exploring nature of that era. Nothing, none, no, nada.

This is a deeply personal piece of art that is devoid of any reflection regarding the Dyatlov Pass Incident to those who died there. I keep expecting the "Terminator" to appear and climb up Kholat Syakul, which makes no sense at all on DYatlov Pass.

Teddy, can it be taken down? Show me the sign up paperwork.

What an insult to the memory of the courageous nine. It reminds me of much of the truly bad Socialist Realism art of the Soviet Union era. But the only propaganda here is to call this thing art or a memorial.

Thanks for the response Teddy.   I think the Dyatlov Group's families should be involved with anything created in their memory and sad to hear that wasn't the case.

I have bit my tongue and tried to keep my opinion of the sculpture to myself but I can't anymore...I hate it.  I find it utterly disrespectful and find no redeeming qualities in it!!!

Очевидно, что памятник имеет явный гомосексуальный подтекст. И вы все избегаете говорить об этом.

I said "phalic", didn't I.
Meaning: A representation of the erect penis as an embodiment of generative power.

This is great, thank you. I published everything I know on the subject here: https://dyatlovpass.com/new-monument (https://dyatlovpass.com/new-monument)

The location of the new monument relatively to the place marked TENT where the pile of rocks and pin were left by researcher KAN (photos (https://dyatlovpass.com/investigation-materials#tent)) is marked according to the words of Aleksandr Alekseenkov (Shura) who went to the pass in 2021, and escorted Kuntsevich back to the camp on Auspiya. (https://dyatlovpass.com/kuntsevich-last-expedition) His words, verbatim: "The new monument is about forty meters north-slightly to the west of the cairn and stick marked TENT on this map."

Read about the controversy regarding pinpointing the location of the tent: Russians vigorously disagree with the Prosecutor's results. (https://dyatlovpass.com/investigation-materials#tent)

Do we know the coordinates of the new monument? I think these are not accurate (61.7573606 59.4359638): https://goo.gl/maps/SaB3c2hidY8fYcTSA

As I said, Shura who just turned back from the pass described the location as 40m North slightly to the West from the place where KAN made the cairn with pin marked on this map by Shura as TENT.

Игорь Б., do you know where I can get a bigger photo or another photo from expedition 2021

and why are the coordinates (61.7573606 59.4359638) on this photo so off?

I can't say that i like it. You could show it in an exhibition, but for the Dyatlov Pass I find it very inappropriate. I would rather see a large rock with pictures, cross and memorial plaque there.

It shouldnt be there. There is one memorial at the pass and that is enough.

Utterly ghastly. To say that "contemporary art is not intimidated by controversy" does not excuse a sculpture that has no connection to the place, people or event it supposedly commemorates, and is %&$#@ ugly as well.

I live in a city that is awash with substandard public "art". I've lost my tolerance on that front.
