My understanding is that the case of the Yuba County Five is called "the American Dyatlov Pass Incident" because the two situations have a few superficial similarities:

* In both cases, the victims abandoned their functional and portable shelter (tent/car), for no apparent reason, in the mountains, during winter.
* In both cases, some victims appeared to have exchanged items of clothing with each other.
* In both cases, the remains of some victims were not found by searchers until after the spring thaw.
