So it just occurred to me that if Yuri K. indeed bit his skin off the back of his hand (because the skin was found in his teeth - how we can say it was his skin and no one else's, I am not sure).
Unfortunately I don't think we will ever know - if it was someone else's it would better prove a brutal fight.

But anyway, the fact that this is what is assumed to have happened perhaps points to the notion that he was trying to keep quiet.

Why??? This could be because he was hiding from either other humans, other hikers or animals, right? Otherwise, why try to stay quiet by biting your own skin off Ie. stifling a cry - as the coroner put it.

The kind of information that the attackers wanted to know is: where are the four hikers who escaped us and who we can't find ?

(The four of the den were hidden nearby, 75 meters away, but the attackers did not know that.)

Krivonoschenko's torture fits perfectly into my hypothesis N° 2 (I indicate some approximate durations to fix the ideas).

When, 3 hours after leaving the tent, Doroshenko and Krivonoschenko are attacked next to the fire, kolmogorova, Slobodin and Dyatlov are already lying in the snow, stunned and unconscious and they are dying of cold.

Doroshenko is also stunned by surprise. Krivonoshenko finds himself alone in front of the attackers. He is subdued and tortured by fire to find out where the others four hikers are.

But Krivonoshenko is a tough. He won't say anything. His leg is burned in flames or embers, but Krivonoshenko does not talk!

In desperation the attackers are forced to wait, leaving Krivonoshenko unconscious and freezing to death, hoping that the four of the den will finally come out of hiding.

The attackers know how to wait because their tactics in this night combat consist of a succession of surprise attacks and well-calculated retreats.

After 6 hours, the four of the den come out of their hiding place and discover that Doroshenko and Krivonoschenko are dead.

The attackers then resume their offensive and after confused and violent hand-to-hand combats succeed in defeating the four of the den.

To symbolically celebrate their triumph the attackers broke some ribs with their blunt objects and cut Dubinina's "Stalinist viper tongue" with a small knife.

In one day of skiing it was easy for the attackers to find the tent by following the track of the hikers from North-2.

The attackers were few in number and were armed only with blunts objects made of birch wood and also with an Improvised Suffocating Device (ISD: SO², NO², Cl²...? ) slipped by surprise inside the tent.

The fights in the night of February 1 to 2, 1959 were therefore turbulent, lasted 9 hours and the final victory of the attackers was not certain.

On the morning of February 2, 1959, the attackers were tired and strained because they had received heavy punches from the athletic hikers. The attackers had neither the time nor the energy to stage a scene. The attackers quickly return to North-2 following the onward track and hoping that their 3-days absence will not be noticed by anyone suspicious who might report their absence to the authorities.

 Then the wind that blew on the slope of Kholat Syakhl from February 2 to 26 has erased almost all traces of the fights.

Attackers = political enemies = terrorists = ex-zeks = free men = (NOT prisoners) = inhabitants of the Vizhay region (maybe settlement 41)
= internal combatants in an ongoing patriotic war = unknown nationality (Chechens, Poles...)

The DPI is an ordinary example of an unexpected terrorist attack like there are all over the world and also in France (my country).

The DPI was a serious fiasco for the KGB which showed its incompetence by proving unable to protect 9 persons belonging to the elite of Soviet citizens.  The only remaining question is: were the attackers subsequently identified by the KGB ???
