While digging, as one does, I found a Wiki article on things that happened around the world in 1959. I had forgotten that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson died the day after the Dyatlovites! On February 4, 1959, not too far from where Yuri Krivo worked, (Chelyabinsk,) Latvian speed skater Nikolay Shtelbaums broke the world record for the 10,000 meter skate, set by Hjalmar Andersen in 1952.
