I remember reading an excerpt I think it was from
Either Zina or Lyuda's diary that Seymon tried his "device"   What was this device?

The mention of a device has had a few suggestions..there are some threads about it. From what I remember the conclusion was and one that makes sense, was that it was a sleigh or sledge made from the extra skis.
It probably didn't work in the deep forest snow. 

There's speculation of various devices but there's no proof of anything.

I will look again but for some reason I thought I remember reading wires and that he tried it after they stopped for the night

Zina writes in her diary on January 28:

Thank you.  I rembered it completely wrong and attributed it to the wrong person.

That word was translated maybe incorectly, as device.
It's about constructing sledges from skis, descrined in "Evening Otorten@.
