OLD JEDI 72

Well, it seems everything is back after a week. One thing I noticed about this site is that it logs our IP address' publicly for everyone to see under our respective comments. I noticed when I stopped using a VPN here, my ports were being scanned twice a day (which has never happened) but my security was blocking the attempts. Now with the attack on this site, it's starting to make sense. I highly recommend everyone use a VPN. Also I would like to know from the owners and management is it really necessary to show IP's under our comments? That's probably how these attackers are enslaving all of these bots. From anyone unable to have seen the original message (I had to switch browsers to see it), here's the original message from I assume Teddy:

"We apologize for the delay in the reports from the expedition, as well as the interrupted publications. Our server is under DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of traffic. This traffic is often generated from numerous compromised computers or devices, known as "bots", that are controlled by attackers. From another forum: "What is a DDOS attack? In essence, an overwhelming influx of data/page requests. In actuality, they involve a wide array of 'zombie' devices that make ping the servers. These typically include devices with weak security - things like household appliances such as washing machines, switches, alarm clocks, etc. They also include audio equipment as these devices have some of the weakest security. These devices get hacked and then lie in waiting to be woken up so they can ping the target. The reason for the wide array of devices is so that the ISP cannot block service to any one source making data/page requests." The site Dyatlovpass.com is already under Cloudflare, but this solution is not applicable for the Forum which uses SMF and that means users won't be able to see what they post in real time. We are working on resolving this issue. UPDATE: Forum is currently migrating to a new server and will be back up on AUGUST 12."

So it seems I was mistaken, only I can see my IP under my comments, and not everyone else's IP's. I assume users can see their own IP's as well, so what's the point of that? Can moderators see everyone's IP's and possibly collect them?

If you are not logged you don't see anybodies IPs. If you are logger you see everybody's IPs.
Has nothing to do with Ddos attacks.

I appreciate the reply. I didn't know what was going on until I switched browsers, I had thought I got drunk and said something dumb and got blocked lol. It just seems odd this happened after I started getting port scanned. And your message said it enslaves air conditioners and appliances which have weak security. So they have to be getting in somehow and collecting IP's somewhere. In any event, glad everything has worked out so far.

The only IP "they" need to launch an attack is the IP of the forum. If there is no third party protection this IP can be seen with a simple ping.
No one needs the IPs of the users.

users only see their own IP, guests see none, Admin sees all because thats how bans are issued.

They arent getting into anyones PC or device through this site.  thumb1

After the attacks, the entire site had to repopulate and transfer to a different server with that type of protection. With that comes a period of time where users are essentially stuck on the old board which causes all kinds of wonky issues. All complete now

Hey good to know, thanks. I was wondering if you were still around, I've read your pithy comments as a guest for awhile now but they're always from years ago. Good to 'see" you. My issue was my ports were being scanned and that never happened before, so I was trying to connect the dots.
