I always had this nagging thought about how the recruiting of college students at various intervals was an inconvenience to them, their professors and the institutions. I have not thought that any of the rescuers were particularly excited about being yanked out of school at the time. They might have taken the moral high road and thought thet were helping friends in need. They could just as easily have thought they were being inconvenienced because the hikers overreached and now there was damage control. To make it worse, they were not learning, or having to be remediated because the Sports Authority really didn't care.

Those kids were going out in the cold and staying in the cold in order to bend their backs all,day poking holes in the ground only to return and have to play catch up at school. As a reward they got to look a dead frozen kids just like themselves. No win situation, yes?

Just to pile on, consider.

You do not send college kids out, nor keep them around a murder scene.
You do not send college kids out nor keep them around a rocket crash location
You do not send college kids out nor keep them aroumd if death is a foregone conclusion
You do not send college kids out nor keep them around if escaped convicts or paid misfits are in the area.
We don't have to say everything that comes into our head.

GlennM, the search engines changed periodically. Regarding skipping classes and other things, Askinadzi said they were given time to "turn in their outstanding grades" (a "tail" is slang for a subject's outstanding grades). And don't forget that it was a different time back then, with different moral values and guidelines.

------------

Yes, they could turn in late work, but do they also have to get current with the new curriculum? Of course they do. Then there is the actual or obligatory mourning at the college. These inconveniences may be nothing at all for those fast learners, but for the more pedantic types, it comes at a cost.

I am guessing that the college kids were sent out for their friends because it should have been a quick job. Then it became a long hard job. With each day, the students get farther behind and their professors have to make more and more accommodations.

We don't have to say everything that comes into our head.
