nMy advice is to be wary of social media on the topic. Currently, assassination, UFO's and conspiracies are all the rage. It is an indication of relaxation of restrictions of expression in certain countries.
The heart of the matter has to do with leaving the tent on 1079. For me, that goes back to an aborted attempt the day before to cross the high ridge to Mt.Ortoten, the hiker's goal. This attempt is a consequence of the team leader Igor Dyatlov hearing and ignoring the warning of the area forester Rempel, who advised against making a winter attempt on Ortoten.
Igor was not going to abandon the hike. There was too much to lose in terms of certification and prestige to not make the attempt.
The group made a difficult hike up one river tributary, the Auspya valley and crossed over to the next valley, the Lovza, keeping to the high ground on the bare ridge above in order to not have to plow through deep snow and bushwhack through thin forest a mile below. Here is where opinions diverge. I contend that bad weather and a wind driven snow slide laid the tent down on top of them and they had to cut their way out and head to the forest below (a mile downhill) to wait for better conditions to repair the tent and continue. In my estimation, the Russian Winter and a faulty snow cave sealed their fate. Others in the Forum, YouTube and in printed material have vastly different takes on it.
Some members in the forum love a mystery. Others want to publish and profit from it. My friendly advice is to remember, all behavior is motivated. What seems reasonable in a warm room today may not be so obvious on a cold, dark and snowy night six decades ago.
