Malakhov – Zolotaryov’s Secret Dossier (October 29, 2026)
Dyatlov Pass: Zolotaryov’s Secret Dossier – New Revelations! (2026-X-29):

[–] Good evening, everyone! You are watching the Russia TV channel. For 10 years now, we have been conducting our own investigation into the deaths of the hikers at the Dyatlov Pass. Today, new relatives of Semyon Zolotaryov will join us in the studio to break their silence. Who was he, really? And could his son, Alexander, have been taken away to another country?

In our previous episode, we featured a man who had remained silent for 30 years before revealing new details. It turns out that Semyon Zolotaryov was deliberately introduced to Igor Dyatlov just a couple of days before the expedition.
[►] Why did Dyatlov bring Zolotaryov along just days before the trek?

[VIKTOR]: The person in charge of preparing the group for the expedition to the Northern Urals invited Zolotaryov – at the request of the KGB – and accepted him into the group. He was told to show up, so he went.

[–] Also, the son of sports club chairman Lev Gordo explains for the first time why his father was blamed for the deaths of the nine hikers.

[GORDO]: After the tragedy, my father was frequently summoned (by the KGB) and told what he could and couldn’t say – and who he could or couldn’t talk to. He was deeply distressed, as he was the one who had effectively granted all the permits for this expedition.

[–] Joining us in the studio today are more of Semyon Zolotaryov’s relatives, ready to break their silence. Who was he, really? And could his son, Alexander, have been taken to another country? Our film crew, accompanied by Zolotaryov’s stepdaughter, Lyudmila, flew to Azerbaijan. What kind of documents might they uncover in the archives?

Headline: A Kuban native in the "Dyatlov group." Semyon or Alexander?

And joining us in the studio today is Yulia Orekhova, Semyon Zolotaryov’s great-niece. Yulia! Your whole family is watching us right now…

[OREKHOVA]: Yes, yes, yes – we’re watching with great anticipation!

[–] With great anticipation, indeed. Especially since our editorial office recently received a letter from people who saw you and wrote: "These people are our relatives – we lost touch with them. Please pass on our contact information to them…"

And I think you – and all our viewers – will be interested to see Semyon Zolotaryov’s niece and goddaughter, Raisa Timofeevna Katorgina. She has also provided some unique photographs.

Take a look: here is Semyon Zolotaryov with his parents, wearing a white suit – or here, with this young woman. It seems her identity remains a mystery for now…

And here’s a photo with two colleagues, both wearing mink hats – look at that! In the Soviet Union, that was the height of style. And here he is with some children.

[OREKHOVA]: I’ve never seen this photograph before…

[–] Could this be Sasha? One of these boys – what do you think?

[OREKHOVA]: I think so. It’s possible.

[–] And did your mother ever attend the wedding of Irina – Raisa’s daughter?

[OREKHOVA]: Yes. Unfortunately, we lost touch after that. We haven’t seen each other since. I don’t even know them, but I truly want to meet them – to see my own kin, my relatives… (applause in the studio).

[–] Let’s take a look at what they told us before the broadcast. So, Raisa Timofeevna Katorgina and her daughter, Irina Yuryevna.

[RAISA]: I am Semyon Zolotaryov’s niece. He was my godfather. I was born when he was 19. We used to look forward to his visits every summer…

And everyone would be so happy… “Oh, what an uncle you have! Such a handsome man! So tall, blue-eyed, with curly hair – and dimples in his cheeks.” In short, my uncle was a real beauty. Even though Semyon was married to a woman named Tamara, he never brought her along when he visited us. We never even saw her.

Later, he had a son, but we didn’t know anything about him – not even his name… Eventually, my grandmother told us that they had separated; she didn’t know where he was or what Semyon had done with the child. Everything was kept a secret. I don’t even know what his name is.

[►] Well, his name was – or perhaps still is – Sashenka [Sasha].

RAISA: Maybe it wasn’t Sasha. I was aware that the child had gone missing. I kept asking my grandmother: “Where is he? What happened to him?” She wouldn’t say a word – just, “I don’t know anything.” My mother wanted to find him and take him in to raise him, but we had no idea where to look or how to even begin the search.

When I found out about Semyon’s death, I was in complete shock. My grandmother told us that she had been summoned to the Urals – to Sverdlovsk. When she arrived there, she was told that a collapse had occurred – an avalanche had swept through, and everyone had perished. Grandmother Vera was taken by helicopter to the site where the group had died; they showed her where their tents had stood.

Semyon’s mother traveled to the Urals to identify her son’s body. But they only showed her a closed coffin. Later, after he was buried, they took a photograph and gave it to her – it showed his headstone.

Everything had been fine, and then – such a tragedy!

[►] Did Tamara Burgach attend Semyon’s funeral?

RAISA: No one knows that!

[►] Didn’t your grandmother ever tell you?

RAISA: Well, they had already split up!

[►] But they did have a child together.

RAISA: She couldn’t have cared less.

[►] Raisa Timofeevna, could you please tell us about his brother, Nikolai?

RAISA: His brother Nikolai? I don’t know anything about that…

[►] You don’t know about Semyon’s brother, Nikolai?

RAISA: No… Semyon also had a niece, Tatyana.
Irina BONDAR (Raisa’s daughter): When we saw Tatyana on Malakhov’s show, we were so happy – and we even got to see her little daughter…

And we would certainly love to meet up, exchange letters, or give each other a call – to reconnect.

[–] Why do you think Zolotaryov’s mother was the only one taken up in a helicopter and shown the site of the tragedy? No other parents were given a helicopter ride or shown the location like that.

[KOSKIN]: That’s a mystery. And when was she brought there? In May?

[OREKHOVA]: Yes, she was brought there later, in May.

[KOSKIN]: But what could they have shown her in May? The snow had already melted…

[–] Still, you have to admit – !

[KOSKIN]: Well, it’s a fact. As I understand it, she was treated differently – given special consideration. Even though there were other parents who held quite high-ranking positions, none of them were taken anywhere!

Marina [BIBNYOVA] (clinical psychologist): I think it’s not just about how they treated his mother, but about Zolotaryov himself. In other words, there was some kind of special preference – which is why his mother was taken to the site where he died.

[–] Well, look – there’s a sense that his mustache might be fake.
[OREKHOVA]: It was always like that. In every single photograph, he had that mustache. It might have changed shape – been a bit longer, or slightly larger or smaller – but he always had a mustache.

[–] But there’s a photograph of him with his family where he’s clean-shaven. It’s impossible to recognize him right away in that one, too.

[KOSKIN]: Yes. And where are the tattoos in this case?

[OREKHOVA]: Yes, actually – there are no tattoos.

[KOSKIN]: He had such a large family. Tattoos belong to a bit of a different world.

[OREKHOVA]: Exactly – and we can confirm that he never had any tattoos!

[–] Yet, in the criminal case file, the person who was buried had tattoos all over his body.

[OREKHOVA]: Another mystery, then – who exactly was buried?

[KOSKIN]: And who is lying there – who was actually buried? Where is the real Semyon? That remains an open question.

[ARKHIPOV]: Andrei Nikolayevich! Could you show the photograph where he’s standing with two well-dressed men wearing hats?

[–] Those look like members of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee, at the very least!

[ARKHIPOV]: This is a very significant photograph – one that warrants further investigation, specifically regarding the two individuals on either side. And notice that Semyon is in the center; he’s always the central figure in any group. It’s a remarkably striking image. I am extremely grateful to you.

[–] It was provided by his relatives.

[ARKHIPOV]: This is an exclusive. Wonderful!

[OREKHOVA]: Yes, indeed. I’m seeing it for the first time, too.

[ARKHIPOV]: I’d also like to mention Semyon Alexeyevich’s funeral. It was handled by Viktor Fyodorovich Bogomolov – you’re familiar with him, I assume? I interviewed him in great detail back in 2013. It was a very small procession. Vera Ivanovna was brought there, as noted. There were no speeches, no tears – she remained completely composed. She was given a stool, and she sat for a while. And he was in a closed casket, of course. His body was laid to rest. I asked him: "Was anyone taking photographs?" "No." "What about – were there any 'men in plainclothes,' so to speak?"

He thought for a moment: "No. I remember everyone who was there. There were very few people. Aside from Vera Ivanovna, I don’t believe any other women were present."

[OREKHOVA]: He might not have noticed whether or not photographs were being taken.

[ARKHIPOV]: At least, not in his immediate vicinity. And he always spoke of the situation being extremely grim. This was the last funeral – he had been the one handling the funeral arrangements for all the guys…

[–] By the way, notice how he looks – just like someone out of the film *Kuban Cossacks*. Look here, for instance…

[ARKHIPOV]: That’s a very striking photograph.

[–] This one also came from the relatives…

[ARKHIPOV]: He was a man who knew how to take care of himself; he was well aware of his own strength.

[OREKHOVA]: He was the pride of the family. He was, of course, a fairly well-educated man.

[–] Now, looking at these photos, do you see any resemblance to your own relatives?

[OREKHOVA]: Yes, he looks a lot like my uncles – my mother’s brothers.
[–] We’ll pass along the phone number for your relatives. We had hoped they might come, but Raisa Timofeevna explained that she’s 86 and in poor health. Her daughter is much younger, but she recently underwent leg surgery. In short, they’re all in a rather fragile state.

As we recall, there may be a trail leading to Semyon Zolotaryov in Azerbaijan, so our film crew set off for Baku. Let’s take a look!
[KOMOVA] (stepdaughter): My mother was very fond of Sasha. I remember perfectly well how she would carry him in her arms all the time – she was always interacting with him. Naturally, I helped her, too. He was already trying to be a bit independent, starting to stand on his own two feet. He was such a smiley, calm little boy.

So, naturally, my mother and I both loved him very much. When he was one year old, my mother and I went to pick him up from kindergarten, as usual. When we arrived, the teacher said, “Sasha has already been picked up.”

My mother was quite surprised and asked, “Who picked him up? His father?”

Yes, his father had come and taken him.

We got home, but neither his father nor Sasha was there. My mother began to get anxious. She thought perhaps he had taken him to show him to his grandmother.

We went there, and I remember the house – the gate was shut. Mom started knocking on the gate, but no one opened it. We sat down and waited. I kept thinking that maybe someone would show up, or perhaps they had just gone out somewhere. In the end, we sat there until it got dark, at which point Mom became hysterical. She began pounding on the gate, crying – I remember her crying so vividly. Even now, it brings tears to my eyes, because I lived through it all.

An old woman came out – it was Zolotaryov’s mother. She started shouting at my mom: "Get out of here, and don’t ever come back!"

Mom pleaded, "Give me back my son! Give me back my son!"

The woman replied, "We’ve sent him off to an orphanage. Get out and don’t come back!"

The next day – I don’t think I even went to school – we went back there. Mom started crying again, begging, "Give me back my son!"

And that old woman just said, "You don’t have a son anymore!"

We imagined all sorts of things… Maybe he was hurt and wanted to take revenge on her? Mom always held onto a glimmer of hope that things weren’t as bad as they seemed, that it would all work out. But time passed, and we kept going back to that woman – the one who had screamed at Mom. I remember that, from that moment on, we never saw Sasha again.

[–] Lyudmila Komova is with us in the studio today. She is Semyon Zolotaryov’s stepdaughter. Good evening! And what were you feeling just now, backstage, as you looked at these new photos – the ones we’ve shown for the first time today?
[KOMOVA]: You know, I’ve never been this nervous… It’s not my first time on a TV show, but this whole story has stirred up so much inside me. Our trip, and everything connected to it – it’s like a glimmer of hope. Looking at these, I’m reliving it all over again.

I have such vivid childhood memories involving Sasha. It’s as if I’m experiencing it all from the beginning once more.

MARINA: Tell me, is your hope that you might still be able to find Sasha?

[OREKHOVA]: We have that hope, too.

[–] Of course! Especially since Lyudmila traveled to Azerbaijan – where the trail leads – with our correspondent. And, as I understand it, you met a great many people there.

[KOMOVA]: So many people. We’d head out at 9:00 a.m. and not get back to the hotel until 10:00 p.m. – it was already dark by then – because we visited so many different places…

[–] So many archives, so many locations! Let’s see what your search ultimately uncovered. Take a look!

[KOMOVA]: This is my birthplace. Back in the Soviet era, this village was called Arkhangelovka. I lived in this house for seven years. There used to be a huge orchard here – apples, pears, peaches, apricots – everything! Now, it’s just a vacant lot. And across the road, there was a hospital.

Hello there. Would you believe that I was born in this hospital? Do you remember Alexandra Fyodorovna? And there was also a family called the Gvozdevs.
WOMAN: I do remember the Gvozdevs.

[KOMOVA] (joyfully): Really? Lyuba Gvozdëva. She’s a friend of mine. But where is she now?

WOMAN: I have no idea where they are anymore.

[KOMOVA]: So, they don’t live here anymore?

WOMAN: No, nobody lives here now. All the Russians have moved away.

MAN: I know the name Burgach.

[KOMOVA]: I’m Lyudmila Burgach.

MAN: Burgach. Yes.

[KOMOVA]: You know the name?

MAN: How old are you now?

[KOMOVA]: 78.

[MAN]: I’m 78, too.

[KOMOVA]: We’re the same age! Maybe we even sat at the same desk in school?

MAN: Perhaps. Perhaps.

[KOMOVA]: I used to come here every summer to visit my grandparents. Do you remember them? Konstantin Burgach.

MAN: Of course, I remember him.

[KOMOVA]: Let me give you a hug… You remember my grandfather.

MAN: Well, he had a bit of a limp.

[KOMOVA]: Yes, he walked with a cane… He’d had a stroke.

NOSOV: Lyudmila’s brother, Sasha, has gone missing. We’re looking for him.

MAN: I don’t recall a Sasha in that family.

[KOMOVA]: This house used to be the village council office. My mother worked here as a secretary. That’s likely where she met Khromov – my father. He had come here on a work assignment, stopped by the office, saw her, and fell in love. He took her back to Baku, and that’s where they lived. I think they were happy.

[–] Did you manage to find anything? Any leads?

[KOMOVA]: No, of course not. We submitted a request to an MFC (multifunctional center) in Baku to search for Sasha, and they replied that no such person with those details exists. They searched throughout Azerbaijan.

[–] But you also sent inquiries within Russia, didn’t you?

[KOMOVA]: Yes, after we returned to Russia, we submitted a request there as well – also through an MFC.

[–] And were you able to find out anything?

[KOMOVA]: No, unfortunately, there’s no record of such a person there either.

[–] Let’s return to your newfound relatives. What did Semyon Zolotaryov’s goddaughter say about his character? Listen to this!

[RAISA]: A newspaper article appeared in 2013 – it was about my uncle, a man from the Dyatlov group who was from the Kuban region. When I read it, I was outraged by all the things being claimed. The paper said he called himself "Sasha." Well, he *did* call himself Sasha – he simply didn’t like the name Semyon, so he went by Sasha.

When they showed a photograph of him with tattoos on his body – I don’t believe it! His body was completely clear; there were no tattoos! They even accused him of being a traitor – that’s impossible! Throughout his entire life, he was nothing but a good person.

IRINA: The idea that he worked for foreign intelligence… no one believes that.

RAISA: But the claim in the newspaper that the KGB sent him – that’s plausible.

IRINA: Most likely, Semyon was planted in this group to eavesdrop on conversations. All the other guys were from industrial facilities – the kind that were classified – and the goal was to ensure the KGB knew everything. In this photograph, Semyon is with two other men. They look like serious individuals – perhaps KGB officers.

There’s an inscription on the back of the photo, though the handwriting is very hard to read. One man is Zolotaryov, another is Sokhin. The first one – Mustafin, first name Khasan, from the city of Ufa, "Second District." As for Sokhin – no first name, just the surname.

RAISA: His entire family and all his relatives want to know the truth about Semyon. (Applause in the studio).

[OREKHOVA]: It’s not just the whole truth about Semyon’s life that we want to know; it’s the truth about his death.

[–] Yes… And the question – as you can see, the audience is following every detail – concerns this document. Take a look, Comrade Zolotaryov – though, once again, there’s no official confirmation. It states he was a member of a primary "SMERSH" (counterintelligence) unit and had been in the army since September.

He was also decorated with the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War (first and second class), the "For the Defense of Stalingrad" medal, the "For Courage" medal, and the "For Combat Merit" medal. Over the course of three months, operating independently under difficult conditions, he was deployed behind enemy lines five times as part of a "SMERSH" battalion. He provided a great deal of valuable intelligence. "All members of Zolotaryov’s group deserve government awards.

What do you think – is this an authentic document, or is it another fake, like the tattoos of Zolotaryov that appear online?

[LUZAN] (historian of the security services): The style is characteristic – not of the wartime era, but of the post-war period. It’s an official personnel evaluation – a 'party-service' character reference – for an operative. I can say with 100% certainty: it’s genuine."

I noticed that at the top, it says 'Reception Office of the Prosecutor General’s Office.' What might that imply? It suggests that this document was officially requested by the Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently obtained."

There’s something else I’d like to mention – please don’t misunderstand me. Your television program has been running for quite some time now, and it’s generating a great deal of interest." I was in Abkhazia recently. My friends there follow it with interest, though they complain that whenever your show airs, it disrupts the resort season – people leave the restaurants to go watch television!"

[–] Well, let’s take a short break for a commercial. Coming up next: new testimony from a friend of Igor Dyatlov, as well as details on an international expedition to the mountain pass. What items did the participants discover at the scene of the tragedy? And what will our guest, Viktor Iosifovich, have to say about them? Stay tuned – we’ll be right back."

[–] Good evening, everyone! If you’ve just returned from work, we’re continuing our investigation into the deaths of Igor Dyatlov’s group. We have new details: we’ve located additional relatives of Semyon Zolotaryov, who have shared unique insights into his life – and we’ll be showing photographs from their family archive."

Before the break, we began discussing a document that we discovered online a few years ago." And today, experts in our studio are providing their commentary on it.

[KOSKIN]: A document concerning Semyon Zolotaryov and the "Smersh" group. It’s interesting that the USSR Prosecutor's Office took an interest in it on November 12, 1959.

[–] Was this after the tragedy, or before?

[KOSKIN]: It was after the tragedy. The official criminal case had already been closed, yet something was still going on… Why would the Prosecutor's Office be interested in this document in November – six months later?

[–] And the main question: what happened to the child? Where is the boy? How could he just vanish? Without any documents, without anything at all…

[ARKHIPOV]: At the time of his death, Semyon was a member of the Communist Party – that’s the first point. Secondly, there’s a very promising lead involving the photograph with those two high-ranking individuals. Experts need to analyze the handwriting, identify their surnames, and follow up on that.

As for this typed copy – this so-called "document" – I have some reservations. In my view, the typewriter used suggests a later period.

[–] The copy is very modern. Yes, you’re right. What is this? It looks like it’s from the 1980s, if you ask me.

[ARKHIPOV]: Yes, it’s definitely more modern.

[OREKHOVA]: Or perhaps it’s simply a copy! |

[–] Let’s invite Oleg Rybakov to our studio – a researcher and deputy chairman of the board of the Dyatlov Group Memorial Foundation – who personally took part in the search efforts in Azerbaijan and traveled to Baku with our film crew. Do you also believe that someone tampered with Zolotaryov’s personal history – scrubbing certain details and mixing things up?

[RYBAKOV]: Hello to everyone in the studio! Hello, Andrei Nikolayevich! As for the idea that someone intervened and stirred things up… there are certainly indications of that. I can see it – as a historian, as a specialist, as an archivist. I can see it. Truly.

[–] And what about Sasha? That’s the main question, after all!
[RYBAKOV]: A person cannot simply vanish! Do you understand? You cannot just erase a human being! He was born on February 10, 1956. He lived for three years with his mother – and with Zolotaryov. Then, suddenly, he disappears… That can’t be right! If we can’t find him now, there’s only one possible explanation: the child’s surname must have been changed! But who changed it? Let’s think about that!

Marina [BIBNYOVA] (clinical psychologist): Looking at Zolotaryov’s psychological profile, he’s a very strong, driven man. He keeps all his feelings and emotions bottled up inside. He exerts absolute control over everything!

[RYBAKOV]: He doesn’t show anything on the outside.

MARINA: Exactly! Outwardly, he makes a point of showing that he’s in high spirits – he’s the model of composure. This raises a question: what kind of relationship did he have with his wife, Tamara, that would lead him to take the child away – essentially as a way to punish her? That’s one possible hypothesis.

Could their relationship have been so fraught that he decided to punish his wife by taking the child?

[KOMOVA]: I wouldn’t say that… Look, I was only eight years old; I wasn’t really in a position to analyze their relationship.

MARINA: But surely you must have heard something…

[KOMOVA]: I just saw that he was with us, that he was involved.

MARINA: Were there any arguments or rows?

[KOMOVA]: I don’t recall any. There couldn’t have been any major, explosive fights – I would have remembered that…

MARINA: Sometimes, memory can erase vivid moments associated with negative emotions.

[KOMOVA]: I would have remembered a moment like that… But there were no instances where they were, you know, really fighting. I don’t know what happened. I honestly don’t know.

[RYBAKOV]: They could have hidden everything – the whole situation with the child, you see?

[KOMOVA]: My theory is that he found another woman. So, he simply left and took his son with him.

MARINA: From a psychological perspective, when a man finds another woman, he usually leaves the child with his first partner – or they might reach an agreement for him to take the child. But this particular type of man is clearly employing a harsh form of manipulation against his spouse, essentially using the child to punish her.

[KOMOVA]: I don’t know what he meant by taking the child. I think that, given the kind of person he was, he simply couldn’t bear to leave his only son behind with anyone else… So, he just took him!

[–] Could we return to the story of the tragedy? Oleg! You’ve spent many years studying the Dyatlov Pass incident. Tell us about your theory regarding the cedar tree!

[RYBAKOV]: You see, if we could read the language of trees, that old cedar could tell us so much – and our work here would be done! But, as it stands, we can’t. The cedar has simply become a symbol of the tragedy.

[–] The fact that the cedar is a point of significant interest is also highlighted by our primary narrator, Viktor Iosifovich – a man who, I should add, remained silent for 30 years, deciding that he now has nothing left to lose… And just look at the unique, new details he’s shared with us.

[XENIA]: Could you tell us more about this cedar tree?

[VIKTOR]: The cedar marks a coordinate along the Siberian Tract – the route used to transport prisoners from Vologda to Tobolsk. It was planted by a Russian surveyor who was tasked with mapping out this road across the Urals.

The cedar grows near a stream, about 20–30 meters away. They needed to re-establish communication with Sverdlovsk – with the command. The radio station required alternating current (AC), but as it turned out, there was no AC power available at that location.

They used an alkaline battery – the kind taken from a submarine – as a power source, connected to a TB3 converter, with the signal then transmitted to the antenna via an A-4 coaxial cable. The antenna was energized, allowing them to broadcast the signal. This was a special-purpose unit, positioned about 1,400 meters below the site where the hikers’ tent was pitched.

[XENIA]: But why would the military have set up a radio station there?

[VIKTOR]: To communicate with the command and find out when the aircraft carrying the secret weapon would take off from Chelyabinsk. In fact, a plane was already en route from the Chelyabinsk military airfield at that very time.

For the antenna to function, it had to be raised 5–6 meters off the ground. To achieve this, they hoisted it into a cedar tree, hooking it onto the branches using a special hook attached to a cable about 5–6 millimeters in diameter. Once the hook caught on the branches, the antenna was positioned at the necessary height for operation.

[XENIA]: So, they knew exactly when the plane was taking off and when the capsule would be released?

[VIKTOR]: Yes! The command had specifically sent them there to take all the necessary measurements following the test of this secret weapon.

[–] That is a completely unexpected theory – one we’ve just heard today! But before we continue, I should tell our viewers that a major international expedition took place this summer. You can see the footage on your screens right now. This is the Dyatlov Pass.

A group of researchers from Russia, Belarus, and Bulgaria traveled there, attempting to find any remaining artifacts at the site. Irina Talmatskaya from Belarus and Elena Tsybulskaya are here to tell us what the group discovered. Good evening! This isn’t your first trip to the Dyatlov Pass, is it?

IRINA: No, it’s not.

Before this, you had already visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. You two are quite the brave pair! So, what did you find there? Tell us! I see you were using a metal detector.

IRINA: Yes, we used a metal detector. We searched and found a few items – things like wire, or perhaps cables or something similar, wrapped around trees. We also found various metal fragments – it’s unclear what they might be. We haven’t been able to identify them.

Was there a specific objective for this expedition? Why did people from different countries come together to go there?

IRINA: In a sense, yes. It was a research-oriented mission – an expedition, not just a casual hike – led by Teodora from Bulgaria.

From Bulgaria?

IRINA: Yes. Under her leadership, we searched for artifacts – anything new that might help shed some light on…

What did you conclude for yourselves? The Mansi, an avalanche… what was it?

IRINA: No. It was most likely something man-made – a "technogenic" event. As for exactly what it was – it certainly wasn’t an avalanche. “When I first headed toward the Dyatlov Pass, I was fairly convinced that it had been a slab avalanche… But once we saw the actual landscape, we realized that it wasn’t an avalanche after all.”

[-] And Lena is a fan of the *Dyatlov Pass* TV series, right?

LENA: Yes.

[-] Did you recognize Zhenya Antropov?

LENA: Yes. But he hasn’t recognized me yet…

[-] You’re from Polotsk, in Belarus. What compelled you to go there?
LENA: Irina pushed for this. It was her dream – she really wanted to visit the Dyatlov Pass. I firmly believe that if you have a dream that can be planned out and assigned a financial cost, it becomes a goal. And we achieved that goal. We made it to the Dyatlov Pass.

[–] So, you found some wire there, right?

IRINA: I’m not sure if it’s wire, or some kind of electrical leads or components. It’s hard to tell. They’re clearly very old, which makes it difficult to identify.

[–] We sent these artifacts of yours to Viktor Iosifovich. Let’s see what he has to say about them. Take a look!

[XENIA]: Let me show you the most important piece. What do you make of this? Pay close attention – perhaps it will remind you of something.

[VIKTOR]: Well, that’s a branch from a cedar tree.

[XENIA]: Yes, we had to bring in some heavy-duty gear for this.

[VIKTOR]: They used these bits of wire to attach a shelter – a canopy – to the trees. They’re 80 centimeters long.

[XENIA]: And what about this – what is it?

[VIKTOR]: It looks like… I can’t quite recall. It’s a contact point – but for what? Maybe for a battery, or perhaps an antenna. This specific part… I can’t say for certain.

[XENIA]: So, either from a battery or an antenna?

VIKTOR: Yes.

[XENIA]: Are you surprised?

[VIKTOR]: This is news to me! They also had other items with them, like a gasoline-powered burner – they had aviation fuel and a burner. It was a cylinder-shaped device that provided heat. They had an antenna – it was positioned right here, where he attached the wire. He attached this piece to that electrode. It’s possible… but it looks more like an antenna, or something else entirely… And this is a cedar tree. I touch it with pleasure. I placed my hand against that cedar seven times.

[XENIA]: Seven times?

[VIKTOR]: Seven times. How many days did it take for Jesus Christ to create the universe?

[XENIA]: Did you touch it all in one day? Or were you there for several days?

[VIKTOR]: I was walking around the area after Dyatlov had been carried away… A small birch tree had grown right where Dyatlov had been lying. There were no trees there back when they were present… Twenty years have passed since then, and the whole area has become overgrown with trees. As for the cedar, I approached it seven times…

[KOSKIN]: These artifacts are very interesting. Take this small, threaded cylinder, for instance. I think many of our viewers will recognize it – it’s a "hunter’s signal" device. You can buy them in hunting supply stores, even today. It’s essentially a compact flare gun designed for hunters and hikers.

[–] Before we began recording, we showed these same artifacts to Vadim Anatolyevich, and he also identified this item as a noise-making device – something used to create a loud sound. And regarding the wires – do you also agree that they might have served as an antenna? The real question is: did they belong to the Dyatlov group, or were they left there by someone else at a later time?

[VERVAN] (Retired General Staff Colonel): It’s difficult to say for certain whether they are connected to this specific incident. But it is possible that they were used. As for the flare, it could easily have been lost by other people.

And this small cap – if you take a closer look – is most likely the lid from a canister used to store exposed photographic film. Back then, pre-loaded film cartridges weren’t sold. You had to handle the film separately and wind it onto a reusable metal spool in a darkroom. This cap was likely used to keep the film protected inside a sealed container.

Regarding the pocket watch we mentioned in our last broadcast – it wouldn’t make much sense to just transmit a signal out into the void. This implies there must have been some kind of recording device nearby – perhaps inside a backpack – with a microphone hidden within the pocket watch. It’s possible that this equipment was confiscated and never recovered.

[OREKHOVA]: Such microphones could well have existed back then.

[–] It’s interesting – the sketch you’ve drawn is almost identical to the one made by our mysterious, enigmatic figure.

[VERVAN]: This drawing depicts a crystal radio receiver. It could be built using just a few components and required no external power source – all you needed was a ground connection, an antenna, a variable capacitor, a coil, another capacitor, and a diode.

A ground connection could have been established somewhere beneath the snow or ice. It’s unlikely it was actually used, but it shows just how simple it was to construct a radio receiver.

[–] Let’s take another short break for a word from our sponsors. Coming up next: a face-to-face encounter between Nikolai Nikolayevich and Viktor Iosifovich. What will they have to say to each other? Stay tuned!

Good evening, once again! We continue our investigation into the death of the Dyatlov group. Earlier, a sensational revelation was shared in our studio. This summer, an international expedition discovered artifacts at the Dyatlov Pass that corroborate the theory – proposed by our guest, Viktor Iosifovich – regarding an antenna that had been set up on a cedar tree. But the most significant part is yet to come!

And then there’s the main question: why were the funerals held behind closed caskets? This mystery continues to haunt everyone. Here is what the legendary search party member Vladimir Askinadzi reveals for the first time.

[XENIA]: So, given that they were buried in zinc-lined, sealed caskets – does that mean radiation was, in fact, present? Have I understood that correctly?

[ASKINADZI]: Yes. But the radiation levels were actually quite low. There was more talk about radiation than there was actual radiation… You see, Dubinina’s coffin was opened at her father’s request. He took one look and nearly fainted. Her brother wanted to see her too, but the father told him, “There’s nothing to see!” And so, the coffin was closed again.

[XENIA]: Were you at the funeral?

[ASKINADZI]: No, unfortunately not. Everything was classified! I wasn’t there for the burial of the first five – I was stuck at the institute… And no matter how many notices we put up – Bartolomey knows this – they kept getting torn down. Who was tearing them down? The Regional Committee, or perhaps that “special department” – the one Colonel Ortyukov was part of, even though he was officially with the military department.

[XENIA]: Are you suggesting that this “special department” was the one tearing down the notices?

[ASKINADZI]: I didn’t know at the time! I only found out later that they had been buried. Kolmogorova was laid out in our dormitory – she lived there, too – in the first-floor lobby. The coffin was there, but there were no wreaths yet. She was lying inside, dressed in white. Her face was a chocolate-brown color. Her hands weren’t visible; they were covered up.

I stood by the coffin for about ten minutes. I didn’t recognize her from the front. I crouched down to look at her profile… Her face was swollen – it was quite an unpleasant sight. I hadn’t known they were going to be buried that day. When I came back later, I discovered that they had already taken her – loaded the wreaths onto a vehicle – and she had been driven away.

[ARKHIPOV]: Truly harrowing moments, of course… Vladimir Mikhailovich is right. There is an interesting historical aspect to this. Forgive the graphic details. The first five were buried in clothing provided by the supply department of IvdelLag. Any discussion or questioning directed at the heads of the institute, the Party committee, or the student union leadership was strictly forbidden.

Yet, people still came. They arrived to pay their respects, saying their goodbyes with tears in their eyes. As for Lyuda Dubinina’s father, he requested to see her at the morgue – and he actually lost consciousness. He was a veteran Party member, a mature, strong man. Afterward, he told his family: "That is Lyuda… You don’t need to know anything else, and God forbid you ever have to see what I saw!"

This tragedy took a heavy toll on all the relatives – on all the parents of the young people who perished. That is why, even today, we remain deeply concerned and continue to examine this matter.

[IVANOVA]: On this subject, my father wrote: "I am to blame – I bear a great deal of guilt toward the victims' families! I did not allow them access to the bodies, specifically when the time came for identification. The only thing that justifies my actions is that I was not acting on my own accord.

I was being overseen by Yeshtokin, the Second Secretary of the Regional Party Committee; he summoned me to the committee offices several times during the investigation and issued specific instructions."

By today’s standards, that seems absolutely shocking. He wrote this in 1990.

I never fully investigated the theory regarding the 'glowing orbs.' The case was simply hushed up. Incidentally, I suspected as much even back then. I cannot say for certain whether these orbs were some kind of weapon or not." “But I am certain that they had a direct hand in the deaths of those young people.

I’d also like to add that, it seems, he too failed to overcome that elemental force – you know the one I mean… Just like the young people who couldn’t overcome that elemental force – as he himself wrote in his final report… Perhaps he wanted to do something – that’s what I think, anyway – but he couldn’t. He wasn’t allowed to.

Many, many years later, our protagonist, Viktor Iosifovich – who says he’s now 90 years old and has nothing left to fear – met with military counterintelligence colonel Nikolai Luzan just before this television program was filmed.

Let’s take a look at how their meeting went, and how he ended up at the center of this whole scandal – this entire story.

[LUZAN]: Do people ever ask you for your autograph?

[VIKTOR]: No… Though I did once get an autograph from Pakhomova – the figure skater.

I’ve seen Yuri Gagarin in person. I was working in Dzhankoy and met train No. 32, the Simferopol–Moscow express. He was returning from a vacation in Dzerzhinsk, in Crimea – he’d been staying there with a distant relative of mine, Tatyana. She was young, and he had a real weakness for young women.

They’d been swimming in the sea there. There were a lot of young people, and he was part of that group – with those girls. I met him; I’d received a call saying he would be passing through.

[XENIA]: And why did they call you?

[VIKTOR]: He was leaving, so I went out onto the platform to meet his train. I looked, and out stepped Yura Gagarin. He asked me, ‘Where can I buy some *chebureki* [meat pastries] around here?’ I say, "Yura, come on, I’ll take you in there!"

And I once drank vodka with Chernomyrdin. I didn’t know he was going to be there at first.” I was invited out into the woods – to a place called "Chaykin’s Dacha." Brezhnev and Chernomyrdin used to vacation there; in fact, many high-ranking officials did. Khrushchev spent time there, too.

I visited that "tea house" quite often – I remember it perfectly. We’d sit together – Chernomyrdin’s wife was there, and the Minister of the Coal Industry – I’ve forgotten his name – was there with his wife as well. This was back when Chernomyrdin was active.

We got to talking; he was a real man of the people – you could joke around with him however you liked.

[LUZAN]: And he stayed that way, too.

[XENIA]: It’s rather strange how you always seem to end up in all these places…

[VIKTOR]: Well, I’ve trekked through the Altai Mountains, the Pamirs, the Urals, the Caucasus, and the Carpathians…

[–] So, what do you have to say, Nikolai Nikolayevich?

[LUZAN]: Let me start by showing you something. This is the man I’m talking about! We spoke for four hours. He’s a very warm, very sincere person. I asked him, "What compelled you to take on this investigation?" You spoke quite vividly earlier about the burden that weighed on your father – and on you, too…

It’s not just about uncovering a secret; it’s about revealing the tragedy these people lived through.

He told me that Chudny had shared details about the case with him, and later, he traveled to the Urals himself. He examined everything firsthand – touched it, looked at it – and that burden became his own… He’s one of the last ones left. Look at these diagrams – he drew them and showed them to me.

At the time of our conversation, his wife was in a critical condition; she passed away just a few days later. I have to say, he is a strong, courageous, and complex man.

What am I trying to say? You might not agree with everything, but he pieced this picture together based on conversations with the people he spoke to – as well as what he saw, felt, and experienced while he was there. It’s a genuine tragedy. The young women from Belarus sensed it, too – they combed through every inch of that place.

And so, I find myself thinking… by doing this work, you’ve lifted a heavy weight – a weight that hung over your father’s soul, and over you as a researcher, given how deeply you’ve immersed yourself in it. It’s a weight that also rested on our hiker… In this day and age, I don’t believe one can afford to be indifferent. And your television program…

Perhaps I’m being too emotional for a counterintelligence officer, but first and foremost, I am a human being.

[–] We’ll see your meeting in the upcoming episodes. What Viktor Iosifovich told you – it seems to me that could be a television program all on its own. Friends, that’s all for today! Thanks for watching. If you have a story to share, don’t hesitate – give our editorial office a call!
My uncle keept to honest systems: By falling ill yet not in jest, He made all love him with insistence – and couldn’t find some better test. Well, his example gives a lesson!
